Choosing Divorce Attorneys Who Can Work For You

Not all divorce attorneys are the same. Like doctors, some of them are specialists in one or more fields; but lack the rudimentary skills in others. If you are in a particularly arduous battle of wills with your ex-spouse, here are some tips on how to find divorce attorneys who can work on your case as efficiently as possible:

  1. Law firm specialization is a key to your success. Not all divorce attorneys can help you and, in the same way, not all law firms can provide the services that you need. So, try to find your team of divorce attorneys from law firms that are experienced in family law. If this is not possible, you could try to find counselors whose law firms have had unexpected wins by working well for the client, such as the division of retirement funds or sizeable investments, you could try divorce attorneys from law firms with a history of wins in these areas as well. For example, the law firm you have chosen is well versed in child custody and support issues. However, you may not have any children from the marriage. Counselors who specialize in child services will not, therefore, be the wisest choice for you; but, some of the law firm’s other counselors might be, particularly the ones who specialize in division of properties.
  2. If you can, choose divorce attorneys as you would choose new employees for your business. Do background checks, do career record checks, etc. If there is something in a counselor’s background that you are not at all comfortable with, choose another legal representative. If the law firm is not giving you that option, then change law firms. There will always be other divorce attorneys and firms who are willing to represent you.
  3. Divorce attorneys with a long list of successful wins are not the same as divorce attorneys with a long list of successful wins in your county or state. As you know, there are varying laws and policies in different counties and states, especially when it comes to divorce. There are protocols to be observed and the correct people to approach. Therefore, unless your legal counsel is familiar with the local conventions, their long list of prior successes in other places may be of no use to you whatsoever.
  4. Try to ensure that your chosen divorce attorneys have handled at least one court case similar to yours. From this experience, they can provide you with invaluable tips on how to behave in court, and what strategies will work best with minimum friction for both parties.

These tips may seem over-cautious but most people facing divorce proceedings do not give much thought to their choice of divorce attorneys, which, incidentally, is a bad start.

Your choice of representation will reflect back on you in court. If you want the judge (or jury) to favor your demands, you have to start by choosing divorce attorneys who will, literally, speak volumes for you.
