If this cannot be achieved, then be prepared for a lot of time spent pouring over your bankbook, and making repeated appearances in family court. These court appearances will eventually reflect in your bank account. A good divorce lawyer should be able to settle the divorce as soon as possible thus saving you money in the long run.

As an alternative payment option, you could make the fees for your lawyer part of your court settlement. However, you will need to agree this with your chosen divorce lawyer.

Do background checks on the divorce lawyer of your choice.

These days, it is quite easy to do background checks on almost anybody, including the divorce lawyer that you wish to represent you. A good educational background is a positive sign, a clean slate on any public record is even better. Checking the career background of your divorce lawyer can make all the difference in the world.

You need to find someone who has all the experience and skills needed in family court. If he or she specializes in family law and divorce, you have won part of the battle already. If your area of dispute is child custody / child support, you should choose a divorce lawyer who has experience in such cases and has been successful in winning them. This increases your chances of winning your case by at least 50%.

Remember though, that an expensive divorce lawyer is not always the best divorce lawyer for you. The opposite is also true: just because someone is offering free service it doesn’t mean that the legal counsel will work hard to win your case. Consider your choice carefully.
